NB: Extracting souls is not a provable criminal activity

Notes/History

Mathias was once an ordinary person until he happened upon a cave containing a large clear crystal and a smaller one. A landslide had exposed the entrance and being naturally curious he had ventured inside. What he did not realise was he had found a lair that once belonged to a 17th Century Warlock known only as “Bradford”.

Bradford had been a loyal servant of the Demon Sarach and in order to serve him better had come up with a means to pull the soul out of a human and trap it. He had first of all created a powerful Totem that could literally yank a soul out of its host body, the so called “Capture Stone” but to serve his master meant he needed to send such a soul to the dark realm and bypass the spirit realm and its guardian the Gatekeeper.

This second part proved more tricky and since the capture stone could only hold five souls in one go then that meant he needed a storage system to contain the souls of his victims, until he finally found the means to send them on to the dark realm.

He therefore created an even larger stone, the soul cage which could hold 500 disembodied souls. When not working on solving the “great problem”, Bradford would journey out and hunt for the souls on unsuspecting victims. Occasionally he would be seen and so to protect himself he had created the means to free souls from the capture stone and get them to do his bidding. Though that meant losing his prize the distraction also meant he did not lose his life.

Having already worked out how to transfers souls from he capture stone to the soul cage, Bradford was eventually able to find a means to transplant souls, taking one out of a host and replacing it with another. This skill he learned out of necessity, when his wife was killed. Before her death Bradford took her soul and then found another woman with a body that suited his desires. After seducing her, he took her soul and then replaced his wife’s in the same body.

That proved to be his downfall because he was eventually exposed. After a hunting party found her they burned her at the stake for being a witch. Though he had never succeeded in sending the souls to the dark realm, Bradford was not going to let anyone destroy his work and so before they came for him he sealed himself inside the cave in a final act of defiance. For twenty three days he survived and then when death was upon him he used his own magic to place his own soul inside the capture stone.

When Mathias came upon the open cave centuries later, he picked up the capture stone and examined it. With the warlock “living” in the stone, he did not realise that he was handling an Active Totem. Seizing the chance, Bradford asserted control over Mathias and made him his slave. He then decided to resume his work on a world that had forgotten him, once more trying to serve his master Sarach.

This time however his actions have been picked up a lot quicker which means he attracts the attention of powerful magical enemies. Though they have tried to stop him, the Totem is exceptionally strong. On the odd occassion that Mathias has gained control of his own body, mystics have had some success in freeing souls from the capture stone. They have even managed to find and destroy the original soul cage but would later find that the reincarnated Bradford has made new crystals.

The ultimate goal for magical heroes is to remove the Totem from Mathias so he can no longer be enslaved. At that point he will be free and the threat from Bradford can be dealt with more permanently. So far though, Bradford’s use of dark magic and the knowledge that no hero will kill his host in order to win has enabled him to remain at large.

CLEA Classification:

  • Alien

Special Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Droymeda can produced pheromones which greatly affect the judgement of her target
  • Droymeda is able to read the thoughts of others

Limitation(s)/Weakness(s):

  • No stronger than a normal human and can be incapacitated by a variety of different weapons

Rap Sheet/Criminal Traits:

  • Theft

Notes/History

Droymeda as a member of the Isuul race who as well as being able to read minds have the means to emit pheromones which can bend the will of most people. Identified from a couple of sources including Reavant, on Earth she is a minor criminal, often involved in simple schemes to keep her one step of the law and normally getting a patsy to take the fall for her.

On the intergalactic level Droymeda is wanted for many serious crimes involving blackmail. By using her pheromones she would get close to a target and then once within range would use her telepathy ability to extract sensitive information to extort him or her. Galaxy Force has tried to apprehend her on Earth on more than one occasion but each time she had managed to outwit them.

Special Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Extremely tough hide
  • Massively strong
  • Razor sharp claws

Limitation(s)/Weakness(s):

  • Favours the dark

Rap Sheet/Criminal Traits:

  • Assault

Notes/History

About the one thing CLEA can state about the entity is that it does not know exactly what it is. Scientists have concluded that its not an alien but after that they are not sure if its human that has been turned into a creature, a creature that has been affected with Bacteria Z or even a species Beta.

All they do know is that it is able to articulate human speech and will “work” for whomever will provide it with what it wants. As far as CLEA is concerned they do not even know what its overall goal is.

Advice for agents encountering the creature is that it is to be considered extremely dangerous.

Special Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Suits have built in surface forcefield generators making the occupants well protected from most Earth based weapons
  • Suits can be hermetically sealed protecting occupants from dangerous environments
  • Servos built into the suits can amplify a human’s apparent strength

Limitation(s)/Weakness(s):

  • Affected by magnetism.
  • Suit can only protect occupants whilst powered and take considerable time and energy to recharge

Rap Sheet/Criminal Traits:

  • Robbery
  • Theft
  • Assault

Notes/History

At one time Manuel and Gerhard were marine engineers. The ended up together when they were hired as part of the maintenance team on an ocean going cargo ship. During a severe storm the pair were sent on deck to deal with an electrical problem and whilst outside fell victim to a Quarrud-Xaiqrons attack. The alien ship had been on a slaving mission and was leaving the atmosphere when it spied the cargo ship.Though the aliens never normally risked exposure to far south the opportunity for a quick capture was too good to miss and the severe weather was good enough to hide the spacecraft.

Taken an sold together, the buyers who wanted Manuel and Gerhard merely wanted cheap labour and underestimated the skills of that was perceived “simple slaves”. Working together the pair escaped and over the period of nearly two years made their way home. Along the way the developed a strong bond which meant they protected each other. They also managed to obtain a pair of alien armoured suits.

Upon eventually getting back to Earth the pair discovered that they had been declared “dead”, washed overboard in a storm. Though at first they considered setting the record straight, after the battles they had fought to make it home they considered that with the alien suits they could help protect Earth from alien threats.

In time they started to deal with criminal threats but every time they helped put away a dangerous individual the media did not seem to give them any recognition. Being in the shadow of other heroes soon left them frustrated and so they decided that if the world did not respect them then why should they respect the world. That was when they decided to hire themselves out as mercenaries. At first it took time for them to get any clients as they were simply not trusted after being heroes. Eventually though the criminal community decided to make use of a pair of powerful assets and so the Brothers in Armour went from heroes to villains.

Krampus

CLEA DATA FILE

Identity:

  • Krampus

CLEA Classification:

  • Alien

Special Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Krampus is a member of the Furverkissmar race. Though he can appear normal, the “version” of him more familiar to CLEA is his “evil” transformed demonic guise. This change occurs when a Furverkissmar is exposed to too much negative emotions. They can absorb any emotions and actually expel them in a form of “dust”. When it comes to negative emotions this dust is black and if absorbed by humans it can change their emotions to match.
  • In his demon like form, Krampus is consumed by dark emotions. As well as black dust his body can produce a hard coal like concentrated form. Normal black dust is enough to give the average person feelings of pain, despair and hopelessness but the concetrated form can send a passive person violent. Consumed by his own dark emotions, Krampus takes great pleasure in subjecting others to misery.

Limitation(s)/Weakness(s):

  • Santa and Tinsel have the means to turn Krampus “normal” again (but the fix does not last a full year)
  • If Krampus returns to Hphldz then he will die.

Rap Sheet/Criminal Traits:

  • Kidnapping

Notes/History

Krampus is a member of the Furverkissmar race that share their homeworld of Hpdhldz with the Essmessell race. As well as being technically advance the Furverkissmar have a special ability in that they can create physical manifestations of emotions. Whenever one of them gets a build up of emotions either positive or negative they produce a dust, gold if its positive related and black for negative.

Exposure of this dust on another sentient being gives them the same “feelings”. Since the creation of the dust requires a build up over time, a Furverkissmar cannot produce both at the same time. One that becomes negative for a long period ends up transforming into a demonic create like form and this has the means to create a concentrated version of the black dust which resembles a hard substance like coal.

After a dark period in their past where many Furverkissmar turned to dark emotions and enslaved the Essmessell, it is forbidden for them to knowingly look for dark emotions. They also learned to avoid violence and so adopted pacifist ways. The problem for the Furverkissmar is that as well as their own emotions they are empathic, so to avoid transforming they cannot be around others with negative emotions. To prevent them being affected by the emotions of the Essmessell the Furverkissmar created technology to block the negative emotions of them. However when they started exploring the galaxy together, the Furverkissmar were not aware that their emotion blocker might not work on alien races and this would be a problem for Krampus.

As the son of the great explorer Santa Claus VII, Krampus always felt he was living in the shadow of his father. When good things came his way they were no due to his own efforts but rather through the fact that people wanted to help the son of “the” great explorer. To say he hated his father for that would be too strong as they avoided negative emotions, so they just never really got along.

This lack of closeness was the reason Santa did not tell his son about one of the dangers of being an explorer, a tragedy from the past. However Krampus was aware of what had happened when he was organising some junk in the family house and had come across some family diaries that belonged to an ancestor, the famed Santa Claus II and his son Santa Claus III.

In his time Santa Claus II was also the greatest explorer. The final entries in the diary revealed that the interstellar transit portal had found a new address to visit in sector 333 333 35123. After the date of the portal travel the diary abruptly stopped. Krampus then found the continuation in his diary.

These revealed that Santa Claus II and his trusty Essmessell assistant, Ivy Hollybush had made the transit. They were scheduled to stay week if all was well but never returned. It was then discovered that the location of 333 333 35123 was unusual for portal travel could only occur over a 3 day period once a year. That meant that the pair were now stranded.

A year later the facility detected an incoming portal but as the sled materialised, Santa Claus II and Ivy Hollybush disintegrated. Santa’s logs were still intact so everything was not lost. An investigation into the accident found that the planet visited, now known as “Earth” had somehow changed the cellular composition of people who had come from Hphldz meaning their cells lost cohesion when the sled returned to Hphldz. The phenomenon seemed to only relate to staying on Earth a long time.

The logs also revealed another problem for whilst the pair had tried to keep a low profile they had inadvertently changed the culture of a “primitive” society (actually Victorian era Britain). Such interference was against everything they abided by as explorers so in a bid to cover up the mistake the expedition had been removed from history and portal travel to Earth was to be locked out of the portal database. This meant the diary entries Krampus had read were the only recorded accounts of the family tragedy.

When Krampus later became an explorer in his own right, the irony was he would end up stranded in the same location as his ancestor, through an unfortunate series of events. The root cause of his accident was down to a software upgrade used to overhaul the portal system. This removed part of the old lockout for the destination Earth. Had actual evidence of the Santa Claus II incident not been deleted then repeating the same problem would never of occurred.

As it happened, Krampus had visited the transit hub to see if any new unexplored world had been “found” on the targeting system. Having rebooted with the new operating system 333 333 35123 reappeared as a new destination. A long distance sled jump was high Kudos so Krampus asked permission to mount an expedition and was granted it from the ministry of exploration.

Using the sled transit, most normal expeditions only took two people initially, the explorer and his bodyguard and then if more people were needed they would be sent after it was realised the destination was “safe”. Krampus therefore met with his Essmessell assistant and bodyguard, Robin Mistletoe and they made the necessary preparations.

The transit was successful. Krampus then sent back the message to say that they had made it and everything was safe but the message would not send. He therefore opted that they return home to invesigate the problem, only the sled would not connect to the portal facility on Hphldz.

What Krampus did not know was that upon his arrival the portal had switched to receive mode as per protocol and that had reactivated an old subroutine that still had the lockout function. With not way home for the time being the pair donned their holographic disguises and tried to find a safe place to wait. During this time they strayed to far from the sled and were no around when the portal was fixed and a rescue party came. With the window to Earth closing they had to return home.

Within a week Krampus started to realise exactly where he was. Though people had moved on he found references familiar. This was when he knew he was on Earth. Knowing he would have to wait a year before contact could be made was bad enough but he also knew by then that he could not go back.

The combination of his own despair and the negativity of the people around him started him on an emotional downward spiral. Though he and Robin survived and supported each other after 11 months he passed through the emotional equilibrium and started to produce black dust. Robin could only watch on as his friend got worse. He was confused why the Emotional Blocker had not worked and could only conclude that the device did not work on humans.

As Krampus inadvertently affected people around him with his black dust, Robin knew that in the best interest of the alien people his friend needed to be neutralised. That meant he had no option but to euthanise Krampus. Robin failed in his attempt and the anger in Krampus was enough to transform him into the feared creature form of the Furverkissmar. In this state Krampus killed Robin and then went out to find other people to terrorise as his mind embraced the darkness.

Santa Claus VII would eventually arrive and was able to put things right with the people Krampus had hurt. He used his gold dust to return his son back to normal. Their meeting was bittersweet for Santa and his assistant Tinsel had to return home before the transit portal window closed and they could not bring Krampus with them without killing him.

Santa therefore vowed he would return each year until he could bring his son home. Though the intention was for Krampus to not return to his creature form, his father’s “cure” of positive energy cannot sustain him for the entire year when many on Earth are surrounding him with negative emotions.

When CLEA eventually learned of the yearly cycle with Santa and Krampus they tried to capture the latter in order to surround him with positive energy but unlike Santa’s concentrated gold dust, Krampus has been able to fend off any attempt to “fix” him in this manner, simply infecting those around him with his black dust and turning them against each other.

Notes/History

In his heyday Santa Claus VII and his trusted sidekick Tinsel Candycane were perhaps the most famed explorers from Hphldz. He was member of the Furverkissmar race and she belonged to the race known as the Essmessells both of which inhabited the same planet. After retirement he chose to calm down and take a less hectic quiet lifestyle and passed the mantle to his son Krampus.

Thirty years of retirement though came to a shocking end when Santa learned that his son had been involved in an accident regarding the portal FTL transit system. The computer system had been upgraded to improve and unknown to Krampus and the operators some of the subroutines had been removed. This had allowed Krampus to target a planet in sector 333 333 35123.

The destination though had been locked out after an early expedition had resulted in a Furverkissmar and Essmessell getting stranded there. Santa knew the reference well for it was one of his own ancestors that had gone on the expedition. The family knew all about it even if the event had been removed from history for it had tragic ending. Unlike most destinations where the portal could open almost permanently, at the destination known as “Earth” travel could only occur over 3 days after which a link could not be made for another year.

At the time  the expedition director was unaware of this so Santa Claus II was stranded for a year. This was bad but when Santa Claus II and his Essmessell partner Ive Hollybush returned they literally disintegrated upon arrival. Something on the planet had changed their physiology and their bodies lost all cellular cohesion upon their return to Hphldz. To make matters worse Santa Claus II’s expedition logs revealed his presence had accidentally intefered with the planet’s culture. For those reasons it was decided to lock the destination out of the database.

With the outward travel to Earth unlocked, Krampus and his assistant Robin Mistletoe had gone there but then the remnants of the old lockout prevented him coming back. By the time the engineers had  fixed the problem they barely had a day left before the window closed. The expedition did not come back as expected and so a rescue team was sent but only found an empty travel sled.

To avoid getting stranded and not being able to ever come home, the rescue team had to return. Krampus and Robin were declared “lost” but Santa Claus VII would not accept the decision. He felt guilty that he and his son had never been close and that meant he had never passed on the tale of what had happened to Santa Claus II.

A year later, Santa Claus VII decided he was going to find his son, if only to make sure he did not try to return home and end up killing himself. Because he did not know what dangers awaited and his people had to avoid violence at all costs he needed an Essmessell partner to accompany him, but none would join even the great explorer on a fool hardy mission, apart from his old partner Tinsel Candycane.

As soon as the sled was ready and the window arrived, Santa and Tinsel travelled to Earth and began their search for Krampus. They did not like what they found. Using a Yule scanner they found traces of where he had been by the fact he had deposited black dust. Santa kept himself positive and managed to cure the people that Krampus had “infected” by neutralising the effects with his own gold dust. When they eventually found his son, he had  fully transformed and was enjoying spreading negativity.

Santa had no choice but to use all his reserves to “cure” his son and restore him. Once “normal” Krampus explained that he had worked out where he was. Though his father had never told him about Santa Claus II he had actually uncovered old family diaries belonging to Santa Claus II and his son Santa Claus III. His only mistake was not realising why the destination he had punched in had seemed familiar. Stranded on Earth, he had tried to keep a low profile to avoid contaminating the society like his ancestor had but there was so much negativity all around that he could not stop himself being affected by it and once he started producing black dust his only desire was to spread misery and despair and make people suffer. His partner Robin had tried to stop him and so he had killed him which completed the transformation to a full creature form.

The meeting between father and son though was bittersweet for Santa was not only dangerously close to passing from a positive state to a negative one, but the travel window was fast closing. He vowed to return in a year and try to find a means to bring Krampus home and with that he and Tinsel made their way back to their sled and returned to Hphldz.

A year later they returned to find history had repeated. He thus had to repeat what he had done the previous year. Scientists had still not found a way to revert changes to the body of a Furverkissmar  with prolonged expose to Earth’s environment so Santa was unable to bring his son home, but he could at least give him peace and positivity for a while, as well as curing those that had been affected from Krampus’s darkness.

The cycle then ended up more or less permanent. Though Santa tried to find a way of at least keeping Krampus from turning into his “evil” form, the negativity present meant his actions could never quite last a full year. In time Santa and Tinsel got rather good at their work and fixing the problems. Having extra time before the window closed  allowed him to try and help people who were rife with negative emotions and had not be harmed by Krampus. Though expelling positive emotions whilst being in the presence of their negative feelings did drain him, he actually felt good for doing it. Strangely his own positivity actually went some way to limit the positive energy he was handing out.

Over the years of visiting the pair would end up crossing paths with some of Earth’s heroes which led to some unusual encounters. Though his time was limited if he had time and the positive energy to spare he and Tinsel would lend a hand for his gold dust could actually halt a criminal in their tracks, simply because for a brief moment they would no longer be shackled to their negative drives.

On their early trips the pair often made use of their hologpraphic disguises but eventually chose to abandon them as human children could see through the trickery. Considering he was dressed like his ancestor and it was the winter, Santa and Tinsel decided it was easier to let the people of Earth think they were just one of the many “fake” Santas and Elves that were patrolling the streets and shopping malls.

Notes/History

The Furverkissmars and Essmessells live on a planet known as Hphldz far beyond our galaxy. They share their homeworld and generally stay in their own societies. However though they live apart both races work together for the greater common good of all and by doing this they succeeded in developing perhaps the most advanced technology known.

The Fuverkissmars have one unusual ability that sets them apart from the Essmessells and that is they can create physical manifestations of emotions. Over time a built up of positive or negative emotions will appear like a “dust” which can be ejected from their hands not unlike the spores of a fungi. Positive emotions will produce a gold like dust whilst negative emotions will produce a black dust and in worse case will actually form into a solid coal like substance. Significantly as the process requires a finite time to build up a Fuverkissmar cannot simultaneously create both at the same time.

The one problem with their race is that they are also empathic and so can be influenced by the environment. When they are in a positive mood and have built up positive emotions, being surrounded by other positive emotions simply results in more positive “dust”. However if the same Furverkissmar is surrounded by negative emotions they that will “eat” into their build up.

No matter how strong their own positive mood is the external influence has the means over time to override their own thoughts and shift them from a positive to a negative mood. If allowed to continue then they will start to build up negative emotions and produce black dust. Dips in emotions though are easily recoverable which why a Furverkissmar who has a brief moment of anger will not instantly produce black dust. A secondary aspect of staying in a negative status actually transforms the body of a Furverkissmar into a hideous demon like creature. Again this can be reversed if exposed to positive energy.

It was this external absorption what was behind the planets dark past. Negative emotions are always stronger and a group of Furverkissmars decided to experiment with them. Between them they produced masses of black dust and the planet fell into chaos. Like a wave this dark energy spread across the planet and the Furverkissmars on the whole became a violent nasty race which enslave the Essmessells.

The dark period though came to an end when a single Furverkissmars, Kris Ingle decided to break the cycle before all was lost. He secretly rounded up many Essmessells and got them to a safe location. Though it was difficult at first he got them to try and find some positive thoughts. This enabled him to build up a massive level of gold dust which over time he used on fellow members of his race. They in turn followed his teachings and banished the darkness and that in turn led to the Essmessells being free again.

Following that time, it was decreed law that no Furverkissmar would ever experiment with negative emotions. To prevent being unduly affected by their own negative thoughts the Furverkissmars decided to become pacifists and renounce violence, the one negative emotion that could lead to the creation of black dust without the need for external influence. As part of their new begining the Furverkissmar adopted a respect for life which meant they could not willingly harm another and taking a life was the worse sin one of them could do.

Though they now avoided as much negativity as possible, there was still a danger that the Essmessells could still effect them but this was cured with the advent of the EFT or Emotional Filter Technology which prevented them absorbing negativity from the Essmessell race.

As technology further increased the Fuverkissmars decided to explore the universe. They created an unusual method of FTL travel, the TWWJD or Targetted Walnut Whirl Jump Drive which would allow a small sled type vehicle to jump massive interstellar distances in one go. Now pacifists and knowing that some places could be dangerous a Fuverkissmar would usually be accompanied by Essmessell trained in combat skills to protect them.

The one rule which Furverkissmar abided by was that they would never interfere with the development and culture of another race. Unfortunately this happened in sector 333 333 35123 and a Fuverkissmar and his assistant Essmessell ended visiting 19th Century Earth and got stranded for a time which led to the creation of the Santa Claus mythos. Him being left there was the result of a problem that had never been encountered before namely the portal would only connect to the destination once a year for a three day period.

Another good reason not to visit the planet was that prolonged exposure to Earth altered the bodies of the people from Hphldz as the cellular level. This was only learned when the sled returned and the occupants disintegrated upon arrived due to loss of cell cohesion.

To avoid this ever happening again the destination address was removed from the database. All references of the expedition was then removed from the historial records and a lockout was put on the transit portal. Burying the past though would come back to haunt them as a people for a computer overhaul ended up wiping part of the sub-routines.

Without a lockout, the explorer Krampus and his assistant Robin Mistletoe ended up coming across the same address and travelling to Earth. His outward travel triggered the remnants of the old lockout routine which shut down the portal altogether. By the time scientists worked out what had happened and got the portal working Krampus did not return as expected. A rescue team went in to find him but discovered his abandoned sled and he was not around.

By now the travel window was closing so the rescue team returned home. It also meant that a year would pass before any further action could take place. This in turn meant that if Krampus did return he would die.It was therefore decided to leave him behind. The great explorer Santa Claus VII, father of Krampus would not abandon his son and so went to Earth.

When Santa found Krampus though he discovered his son had become corrupted by he negativity of the planet and transformed into a demonic type entity who was spreading black dust wherever he went. This was down to the fact that the EFT that all Furverkissmar wear protected them from negative emotions of Essmessell but it did not work against human emotions.

Santa could not bring his son home but could not leave him to terrorise the people of Earth either. He therefore found the only solution was to keep going back every time the window opened and use the small time available to spread positive energies undoing the harm “evil” Krampus had done and then use the same gold dust on his son to return him to normal.

Unfortunately Santa’s ability to recharge Krampus with positive energy cannot last an entire year so each time he returns the problem has been reset. Until technology is found that will enable Santa to bring his son home he will do what is necessary to both keep him alive and to protect the people of our world.

In the Canadian wilds the Inuit people have to deal with a great many hardships but there are a couple that most are unaware of. Legends among the people have warned them about the blue “sky” people and the “Ice” people. Though most peoples have such legends the references to these strange beings are not simply fables but actually refer to the Quarrud-Xaiqrons and the Icen.

Both races had visited the Inuit and taken their people for a number of centuries. Trying to fight them on equal terms was impossible for the Quarrud-Xaiqrons had advanced magic (technology) and the Icen always ensured they had strength in numbers by building an army. Eventually the leaders met from many tribes and they decided something had to be done. Their people could not sustain being taken in such numbers.

The task lay with the great Inuit mages to solve and they did this by creating four magical Totems. Each one represented an animal found within their lands and when used a Totem had the means to transform its owner into an animal. Having seen how both “Sky” people and “Ice” people acted the mages were aware that they were only interested in capturing people and ignored everything else. With the four Totems at the disposal of the greatest tribal warriors the Inuit gained an element of surprise. Whilst they could fight as powerful animals the Totems could also allow them to use stealth and get behind “enemy lines” without being noticed which allowed them to take back their own people.

The mages only problem was the amount of magic needed to create the Totems meant they were limited to creation of four since the actual procedure killed them. For the protection of their people this was a sacrifice they were prepared to make.

With the Totems created, they would only respond to a person that was deemed suitable to use them. The chosen ones they were called and whenever someone who was eligible to be a Totem bearer was brought near one it would glow. The way the Totem “chose” who should use was not down to whomever was the strongest but was more to how its magic would flow through his or her body and more importantly if that person was virtuous. This sometimes caused a problem when strong warriors felt they should be given the Totems but such a person was often prideful which is why it would not accept them.

As the centuries past the Totems would tend to more around the various Inuit peoples, finding new Totem bearers as an when necessary. Though those chosen could perhaps never win outright against either the Icen or the Quarrud-Xaiqrons, the mystical warriors did create havoc and did cost both invaders valuable time which limited the damage they could cause.

Of the current Totem bearers, one is not actually Inuit which is the first time an outsider has been chosen since they were created. Colton Levesque gained the White Wolf Totem when he was driving his snowplough out of the small town of Duke. In the winter Colton and other snowplough drivers had to keep clearing the snow in order for supplies via trucks to reach Duke and from here they could be dispatched by smaller snow vehicles to the various small holdings and Inuit settlements that could be reached from the town.

When he set off early evening a blizzard was coming in so when ten miles out of Duke he came across an Inuit heading away from the area, Colton thought it was odd. He stopped and asked if her wanted a lift. The man, Nootaikok thanks him but said he was heading to meet with his people and pointed in the direction of an intense display of aurora borealis. Colton though that Nootaikok was meeting up with a hunting party and though it meant he would have to  take a detour, he knew the terrain and  knew his tracked plough could handle it. He therefore volunteered to take the  man.

At that moment the man protested and said it was best if he went alone but Colton insisted. Heading in the direction of the display of colours, Nootaikok seemed rather quiet. Eventually they reached the edge of a frozen lake and in the distance Colton though he could see people approaching. He told Nootaikok what he saw and the man did not look pleased. Before Colton could say or do anything the Inuit jumped out of his vehicle. By the time he got out of his door and ran around the man was nowhere to be seen and Colton became aware that he was being watched by a wolf so he moved slowly back and got into the snowplough.

The wolf then strangely headed off in the direction of the approaching people. As wolf and people closed into each other, Colton though he had been drinking for the wolf attacked the people and they shattered. Then he realised that the people were made of ice. To add to his hallucination a bear joined the fight and then an Arctic Fox and a Snowy Owl.

Colton soon lost track of who or what was fighting each other and failed to see the wolf return. A second later it crashed through the passenger door. Colton panicked but the wolf now changed and became Nootaikok, only he was covered in blood. The inuit held out a necklace and told him to keep it safe and handed it to Colton. The instant he touched it, the object glowed. Nootaikok looked surprised and simply said “Its chosen you”.

He then told Colton to put it around his neck and think of a wolf. Though the whole situation was nuts after what he had just seen nuts seemed the least of his worries. The instant he thought of a wolf he suddenly found himself kneeling on all fours. Then Colton realised he was not on all fours but on four legs. He was the wolf.

Before he could even collect his sences the ice people arrived at the snowplough and started to break in. Heightened senses, instinct and adrenalin all kicked in. Though he was not sure what he was doing or even what exactly had happened, somehow it just felt natural and he lashed out to protect himself.

Claws slashed ice and the invaders disintegrated. As more and more of these strange ice people tried getting him he fought back. Eventually the three other animals arrived and the ice people retreated. With them gone, each of them was surrounded by a glowing light which transformed them into two Inuit women and one man. They called the name Nootaikok at him and Colton realised they thought he was their friend.

Logic dictated to Colton that if thinking of a wolf turned him into one then thinking of being a human would revert the process so he tried that and to his surprise, it worked. The other three were astounded and asked him where Nootaikok was. Colton showed them that the man was lying on the floor of the snowplough but it was not good news for he had died from his injuries.

After the night’s strange events, Colton said he would never tell anyone what he had seen. Then thinking that the necklace belonged to them he handed it over. The man, Tulok though said they could not accept it for the Totem had chosen him to be the new bearer although they did not understand why it had chosen an outsider.

From that moment in time, Colton was one of them whether he liked it or not. This meant he had a great deal to learn and whilst he never considered himself special he had to accept the fact that fate thought otherwise.

In time he became good friends with the other three despite the difference in culture. Naturally some of the Inuit people were not happy that an outsider had been chosen to protect them but it was the Totem that had decided and they had to accept that and him. Whilst he was invited to live with them, Colton chose to stay in Duke as he wanted some normality in between clearing roads and fighting magical creatures and aliens.

Whilst the group does not have an official name, after CLEA heard about them quartet they gave them the code name of Northern Lights for record keeping purposes.

Notes/History

Isaiah and his younger brother Jaylen were the children of a Demonic mother and mortal father. The Demon intended her children to collect supporters for her in the mortal realm. This was one of the ways in which Demons could indirectly interfere in the lives of mortal without incurring the wrath of the Angels by breaking the agreement. However as far as “mother” was concerned, neither one of her children was interested in being part of her legacy. Jaylen chose to fight against it, whilst Isaiah chose to use his special demonic powers for his own ends.

Growing up Isaiah had an insatiable urge for violence. This was connected to the Dark Magic that was part of him. Making others fear him and bending them to his will made him feel strong and powerful. For a time he even ran his own street gang and this was when he and Jaylen moved away from each other because their life goals were heading in polar opposite directions.

It was whilst running the gang that Isaiah discovered that if he drew blood in a fight he became invigorated as his dark magic potent increased. The effect was like a drug and he soon started drinking it but once he did that he soon learned that he could not survive without it. Though he had great magical abilities, rival members of his gang soon realised their leader had a weakness and the tables were turned for they locked him up like an animal. Weak and unable to summon his fiery abilities he was trapped, that was until the gang attacked someone being protected by the Blood Clan.

Sachra came looking for vengeance and traced the gang back to their hideout and completely decimated them. Before leaving she heard a cry for help and not wanting to leave any witnesses she went to kill the source and found Isaiah. Recognising a fellow half-demon she freed him and took him back with her to the Blood Clan.

Here Isaiah was tended for by members and once he recovered Sachra invited him to join the Elite. Some of the other Elite objected, citing Isaiah was weak if he had been imprisoned. By now he was at full strength and unleashed his full power on the doubters. They never accused him as being weak after that.

With the Blood Clan members giving him blood Isaiah has never again been left in a helpless situation. However unlike in the past when he ruled supreme he has had to learn to share power with the Elite. Though not ideal in his opinion he has found it useful to have allies and the price of protecting members from harm is not so bad since it means he can indulge in violence whilst hunting down enemies of the Clan.

Notes/History

This team is one of several unofficial groups that have aligned themselves with CLEA for the common good of all. In the case of the Magical Investigation 5, they do this on account that most law enforcement agencies do not believe in magic. In fact very few in CLEA do not believe in it hence there is no official department.

Carter Wiseman known as “Priest” was an actual priest of a small American parish. A half demon arrived with the intention of assembling followers for his Demon father. The locals refused and so he created chaos. They people still refused to align themselves with his demands and so he killed many by burning the town to the ground. The local authorities put the incident down to an unexplained “natural” disaster but Wiseman knew different for the Church was the only place the flames could not touch. Wondering why his God had seemingly deserted him and his flock, Carter lost his faith for a time

With no town, he decided to hit the road only he had nowhere to go. He wanted revenge but had no idea how to go about it until he visited a small book shop in a town he was passing through. There he found a very old occult book and in it descriptions of Demons and how to vanquish them. The chances of him finding the book seemed remote at best and impossible at worst. What surprised him even more was that there was a reference to the land his church had been built on. A group of artefacts that were supposedly tainted in the blood of an an Angel were buried in an unmarked grave that had the potential to vanquish magical entities. Those same artefacts had prevented the Demon entering the church grounds. He took what he had learned as divine intervention and that his true vocation was to rid the world of the very types of evil that had killed his town.

Returning to the Church which had now started to fall into ruins, Carter located the unmarked grave from the book. Opening the coffin he found a crucifix and a carbine weapon combined with an axe. In latin was a verse that warned that the weapons knew neither good nor evil so the user had the responsibility to use them correctly and prevent them falling into the wrong hands.

As soon as he picked up the crucifix and held it out it ejected beams of light leading him to sources of darkness. It took Carter some time to understand and master the occult but once he got a grasp of how to use spells and incantations he became a hunter of evil magic. His primary weapon became the crucifix and if that failed to stop evil then the carbine would finish the job. It was during one of these “hunts” that he found Jaylen, and nearly killed him.

Jaylen Austin and his brother were half demons, children of a Demon mother and a human father. Whereas Isaiah embraced the Dark Magic, Jaylen resisted it. Normally half-demons were “created” for the purpose of collecting followers for their Demonic parent. Doing this was one way in which Demons could manipulate mortals indirectly and this not fall foul of the agreement. Isaiah and Jaylen chose not to do this but whereas Isaiah was more interest in using his Demonic gifts in a selfish desire for his own power, Jaylen despised the destiny that had been set out for him. He did not appreciate the idea of being “created” to simply serve a Demon and so he chose to use his Demonic gifts to oppose Demons and their supporters. Finding evil to eradicate by comparison was easy since he could “sense” the presence of Dark Magic and home in on it.

Every day was a struggle for Jaylen since it was very easy to be tempted by the negative aspects of the Dark Magic that flowed through his veins. Transforming into his half demon form to access that power fully meant it took a great amount of willpower to avoid losing control.

He was chasing down another half demon when he crossed paths with Carter. The priest tried to vanquish him since he could “see” that Jaylen was part Demon and it took some convincing to prove to Carter that they were in fact fighting for the same thing. Once Carter realised this the pair started to work together.

Helios had been active for some time before Jaylen and Carter came across her. A skilled sorceress she had a history of fighting evil magic and using her gifts to protect those vulnerable to it. Unfortunately over the years she got a little too complacent and that allowed for mistakes. The one that most affected her was when she failed to protect a group of people under her protection and they became victims of the evil Seductress.

Out of anger, Helios decided to create a magical creature, the Revenant by bringing back part of a dead soul and sending it out to hunt down evil. The Revenant though could not defeat the Witches Coalition but instead found other “evil” sources to hunt. What Helios failed to realise was that in her grief she had given her creation a simple command to adhere by and that was to hunt down evil. The problem was that the Revenant could not differentiate between different types of evil and so it went after anything from armed robbers to child shop lifters.

In a bid to stop the chaos, the Angel Joshua sent the Pentacle team to intercept the Revenant. This led the team to finding Helios. However she could not stop the Revenant without killing him again and this would not do. In fact she could not stop it even if she chose as it was immune to her magic. This was why witches had to be careful in creating an undead creature. Pentacle though solved the problem by rejoining the missing part of Revenant’s soul and making him whole and able to understand once more and a the same time freeing him of the obligation.

After this incident, Helios had seen how people could work together and support each other and so when she crossed paths with Carter and Jayden she offered her services. Working with others she felt was one way of avoiding letting her anger get the better of her, since there would be others to provide her with a conscience if her own failed her.

Dhampir was the next one to join the team after the trio encountered her whilst hunting vampires. At one time she had been a novice sister, Evelyn Fuller.  Being “Pure Hearts” (see vampires) the blood of the nuns was a worthy prize. Unlike “normal” humans the blood of a Pure Heart had far greater rejuvenating properties hence the desire for the vampires to “obtain” them. However as with all Pure Hearts, being devout members of a faith meant they channelled light magic (unknowingly) and that meant the vampires could not consume the blood unless their souls were corrupted first. The trick was to corrupt the victims soul and extract the blood quickly before the corruption caused the blood to lose its special qualities.

Having become aware of the work in the community performed by Evelyn and her sisters, they observed the minibus journeys to and from their house and were able to stage a traffic accident. When the group came out to help they were snatched by the waiting vampires. Being in a remote wooded area there were no witnesses. The vampires then started to torture their captives, psychologically and  mentally rather than physically in order to make them lose faith and break their will. That happened to most of the group and as soon as it did the vampires immediately fed. Evelyn though kept her faith right to the end. She however had been born with a medical condition which had given her a weak heart and the strain endured on her body and mind killed her.

She would however not stay dead for too long for the ancient Demon Kinen feared that the death of a Pure Heart might instigate a war with the Angels. In creating Vampires, the Demon Y’Creft had made many enemies in Demon Society due to the actions of vampires pushing the limits of the pact between Angels and Demons. He therefore travelled to the Spirit Realm and met with the Gatekeeper and invoked the Balance of Fate, in order to return Evelyn to the mortal realm. The Gatekeeper decided to honour the request and summoned Hades to locate her soul in the Spirit Realm. Before Hades had the chance to return Evelyn’s Soul to the mortal realm, Kinen decided he wanted to inflict damage on vampire society by giving Evelyn magical abilities. That would technically be interfering in the lives of a mortal (although technically she was dead at that moment). Kinen therefore decided to call down an Angel from the Light Realm. The Death Angel, Othniel answered that call and arrived in the Spirit Realm. Kinen then stated his intention to give Evelyn magical abilities. This did not sit well with Othniel or the Gatekeeper but that was the reaction that was expected so the Demon suggested that in a bid to maintain balance Othniel should also give Evelyn some of his magic. Othniel thought about it and agreed as he also considered that  vampires, as agents of the Demon Y’Creft had overstepped the line.

Hades was summoned to returned Evelyn to the mortal realm and restore her body to life. The gift of light and dark magic though could not be given to a soul so was transferred to his Bident. Hades though requested permission to act autonomously for he expected trouble upon return to the mortal realm. Having never injected magic into a soul in the mortal realm he had no idea of any problems and felt that if Kinen and Othniel’s goal was to be achieved then he would not be able to abandon Evelyn immediately. That meant there was a good chance of encountering resistance from the vampires that had sent Evelyn to the Spirit Realm. He knew that if he fought them then it could be considered a deliberate act of interference and could be altering the balance of dark and light.

The Gatekeeper also considered this but left the decision to Kinen and Othniel. They concluded that once Hades’ Bident had absorbed their gifts, his actions would be like that of a “normal” mortal in the mortal realm and free of breaking the pact between Angels and Demons, ironically a similar loophole which Y’Creft has employed in creating the vampire race.

As time acted differently in the spirit realm to the mortal realm, Evelyn’s soul was restored to her body moments after it had expired yet to her she has spent weeks or months in the Gatekeeper’s domain.  She was returned to the very metal cross the vampires had mounted her on whilst trying to break her. Hades then took aim and unleashed the power he had been given from Othniel and Kinen. Her body was healed and her clothing changed to resemble something more of a Holy warrior. However the magical surge stunned her and rendered her unconscious.

When she next awoke she was alone and well away from the complex which was now ablaze and unaware at what had transpired. A long time later she would learn the Hades had encountered resistance from the vampires as he had removed her body from the cross. He had fought the vampires but was getting overwhelmed by numbers. With their losses mounting the vampires called out for help from their master Y’Creft. Despite his power Hades was no match for a full demon and so had called in support from the other Olympians. Together they managed to send Y’Creft back to the Dark Realm and eliminate the vampires.

After that fateful night, Evelyn took some time to learn her new powers and by the time she was done she she was no longer a novice nun, but a magical warrior skilled in hunting vampires. She carried out these duties alone for two years before encountering Jayden, Carter and Carol and agreed to join them.

The last person to join the group was Raphael Morin. They found him working in the Canadian wilderness as a lumberjack. He had ended up bonding with an Avatar Totem and had become one of the very rare Guardian Avatars, a subgroup of Avatars that were charged only with protecting a particular place or object. His job was to protect the forests from those that would harm it, and to a lesser extent nature in general.

They had come to him, looking for a guide in the wilderness. The group did not tell him they had detected a source of evil magic and merely pretended to be tourists. He likewise did not tell them that he was a Guardian Avatar. When they found the source of the problem, a monstrous creature created with Dark Magic, the group were surprised at the fact he was not surprised. They told him to stand back but as the creature was damaging the forest his Avatar Totem activated and he transformed into a huge stone Golem.

With no need for them to hide their true identities the group joined in and together they vanquished the creature. Then after he had transformed back they asked him if he would join them as they could always use an extra pair of hands. Though Raphael was drawn to the forests due to his Totem, he agreed to go with them as he wanted to learn who or what had sent the creature and he could not do that if he stayed.

The group worked together for several years before realising that with all the magical threats around they lacked resources to get them around quickly enough. This was when they approached CLEA and offered themselves as help to deal with Magical Threats. Though most of the top brass did not believe in Magic a few were believers and agreed to finance the team and provide transport but for obvious reasons would not make their existence official for fear of embarrassing the agency.
